Yesterday we had a server crash that wiped out 4 articles recently published. Had received a WHM security notice that the kernel was out of date, and to rum "yum update" from the console. After doing that the server refused to boot up. I'm saying, WTF?

server crash - data recovery lesson learned

Ive ran yum update many times in the past with no problems. Not all that comfortable using the browser console to diagnose the problem, i contacted support. This server is whats called SLA and the host who answers support tickets nearly instantly, does not provide management. In other words, they maintain their hardware and infrastructure, but otherwise are of limited help if you misconfigure your server.

Support did suggest installing Finnix to rebuild / repair the servers file system, but that did not cure the no boot situation. The server itself (WHM) maintains 10 days of nightly account backups that can be restored with the click of a mouse. That's great if the server is online, but unfortunately for ole FidoSysop there is no way to access the backup files if the server is un-bootable.

The host does offer free server snapshots that i run weekly bit the last one was 5 days ago. cPanel account backups were downloaded 5 days ago that didn't help bring this domain back to current. We had blogged 4 articles in that 5 days that were gone forever. Having no other option, other than to do a snapshot restore. It worked like a charm and the sites were back online in an hour - just 5 days old!

That was a good lesson in data recovery, and how sometimes shit happens. Gotta be prepared just in case. I opted in to the hosts nightly backup option. Lesson Learned!
